  1. How do I know if I have the latest software on my receiver?

You will notice the new look of the on-screen guide and Option menus. Press options then choose: 6 – System Setup, 4 – System Setting, then 7 – System Status (Options 6-4-7). On line "H" you will see the heading Current Version. For DSR505 HD and DVR530 HD the latest software is version F0. For DSR207 and DSR317 the latest version is EC.

    System Status

During the actual download process you will be unable to access the guide or video on your screen. This process occurs during the late night hours so that it won't interrupt your regular viewing. If you happen to turn on your receiver during the code download you should see the screen below on your TV. The image below has been labeled for easy reference. The entire process should take between 15 to 90 minutes (you can check this time as illustrated in item 2 below). If the download screen appears on your screen for longer than 90 minutes, feel free to give us a call to ensure that your unit is receiving the download properly.

    Code Download
  2. When is the new software being downloaded to my receiver?

The new code will begin downloading to customers with the DVR530 HD and DSR505 HD during the months of July and August. We will be targeting a limited number of receivers for the first few weeks, and then slowly rolling out the code update to the remaining DVR530 HD and DSR505 HD receivers, followed by the DSR317 and DSR207 receivers. This software update will take up to 1.5 hours to load all of the new applications, features and menus.

  3. What are the some of the new features included in this download to my DSR/DVR receiver?

Many new features and functions have been added to your DSR207, DSR317, DSR505 HD and DVR530 HD receivers to make them more user-friendly. We will be targeting the DVR530 HD receivers first, followed by the DSR505 HD. You may notice that the DSR207 and DSR317 receivers appear to have the new guide and options already, but there are lots of additional features which will be added with this new software code.

Some of the new features included in the DSR505 HD and DVR530 HD software update include the following:

    1. Support for a new advanced HD broadcasting format, 8PSK, has been added to both the DSR505 HD and DVR530 HD software allowing more room for future HD content, with a crisper picture and even better sound.
    2. The new Instant-On functionality guide can load on-screen guide information within three minutes of being reset (if required).
    3. Star Choice's on-screen guide and options menus have been updated with a new look and design. This newly designed interactive programming guide and other receiver enhancements come to you at no additional cost. This new on-screen guide has a black background; full color theme bars; is easier to read, has reorganized text displays; and provides more descriptive logos and much more.
    4. New stability improvements have been included to greatly reduce instances of lockup and instability.
  4. What is this new Instant-On feature?

Instant-On is a new feature we've added to speed up the load time of your guide. If you unplug or lose power to your satellite receiver, you can reload your guide data quickly with the Instant-on feature.

In the unlikely event that you need to reset you receiver, you only need to hold in the power button on the front of your receiver for around 15 seconds and then release. This will reset the receiver and begin the on-screen guide loading process. The current day's guide data will load within three minutes, followed by the rest of your guide information shortly thereafter. In the past, this process would take upwards of 45 minutes to load because it would load the entire guide information at the same time.

  5. The new guide looks a lot different. Can you explain its new format to me?

Click on the "New On-screen Guide" link below for details on the new format, logos, and color themes. You can now also continue to watch your current programming no matter where you are in the on-screen guide. The new guide has been updated so that it now shows both a picture in the guide, as well as a picture while you are using the Options menus. If you prefer to have a full screen of guide data, simply press the guide button twice to see up to 6 lines of programming information at once. 6. Do I still need to plug in the phone line?

A phone line is a must if you would like in order to save on Pay Per View ordering fees with Instant Pay Per View and take advantage of the caller ID features of your receiver. If you subscribe to Caller ID services in your home, your DVR530 HD, DSR505 HD and DSR317 can display the caller ID information directly on your TV screen, as well as keep a detailed history of your last 20 calls. To view a log of these calls simply press Options, and choose 8 – Caller ID.

In the future we will be utilizing the phone line to enable Interactive features on your Star Choice receiver including local weather, games and more. Be sure to leave a phone line connected to your receiver to take advantage of these future features. If your receiver isn't located close to a phone outlet, you can use a Wireless Easy Jack.

  7. What is 8PSK modulation and how does it affect me?

8PSK is a new broadcast and modulation format that will allow Star Choice to add many more new HD channels without compromising picture quality. This will allow us to compress current High Definition channels, giving us more space for new channels (both Standard definition and High Definition) as well as future applications like Interactive TV. You do not need to make any changes on your TV or receiver to take advantage of this new broadcast format.

We recommend that you find the settings you like best and then tune to your favourite program and enjoy the show. Frequently changing these settings could cause undesired results.

When viewing some programs, you may still find cases where "black bars" will appear on the top and bottom or sides of your screen. Many broadcasters will inserts these bars in a program themselves to preserve the original aspect ratio of the program. There is no need to adjust your settings.

If you own a URC551 remote. you'll notice an ASPECTbutton in the upper left hand corner. You can use this button to stretch or zoom the video to fit the screen, even if a program is being broadcast with "black bars."

  16. Why doesn't my 207 or 317 have the new download yet?

The DSR207 and DSR317 models will be given new software after the DVR530 HD and DSR505 HD receivers have successfully received the new software code. We anticipate that code update for the DSR207 and DSR317 will occur by the end of August, 2007.

  18. What is Descriptive Video? How do I use this new feature?

Descriptive Video Services (DVS) provides ongoing narrative descriptions of what is happening during the video portion of a television broadcast. You can think of DVS like a narrator during a documentary. For example: when members of a crew on a home improvement show build a house, DVS will provide an ongoing narrative of the building process. Any original narration from actors during the program will remain uninterrupted. This service can greatly improve the television experience for customers with limited vision or who enjoy added narration during a television program.

You can check to see if a program has Descriptive Video by looking forDVS in the Interactive Programming guide.

    DVS Guide

Not all programs are available with Descriptive Video and this service is provided at the sole discretion of the television programmers and networks.

To enable Descriptive Video on your Star Choice receiver press Options, then 6 – System Setup, 4 – System Settings, then 1 – User Settings (Options 6-4-1). Highlight ON in the Descriptive Video section and hit ENTER.

    DVS Settings

Please note: If this option is set to ON, you may experience a loss of audio on programming not featuring Descriptive Video. For the best audio experience, only enable this Option when you are viewing a program which includes this service.
